1001 NIGHTS
Music-Theatre work for 4 acting musicians and video projections. Approx. 75 minutes, single act.
A revisiting of the Arabian Nights’ enchanted and magical world in light of the current situation in
the Middle East, highlighting in particular some intriguing parallels between the time-wasting
narratives deployed by the crafty Shahrazad to distract her King-consort from taking her life, and
some other phantasmagorical “narratives” that circulate in Western culture, serving a rather more
convoluted agenda.
Drawing liberally from a new recent translation by Husain Haddawy, based on the definitive Arabic
edition of the fourteenth-century manuscript In the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (all previous
English translations were based on later manuscripts that included Indian and Egyptian
accretions), 1001 Nights provides an original and rather individual take on a much misrepresented
text that is all too often disseminated in a sanitised version, completely missing the true character
and value of this important classic of Oriental literature.
Produced with funds from a SSAHRI grant, and generous support from UHArts.

Last Friday, the 24th of May, I performed at the Weston Auditorium with the outstanding Kate Romano (clarinet) and Philip Mead (Piano) and the great acting of Amanda Dean.

There are not many operas in which you can witness some great acting, interesting instrumental solos and hi tech videos reporting on the current political situation.

It has been a great pleasure to follow this opera through every step of the line, from the early stages of 2011 to the final product. Videos and pictures coming soon!

Network Music Festival

On Friday 22nd of March 2013 I performed, in Birmingham at The Edge, as part of the wonderful Network Music Festival.

Accompanied by Tom Webster, from the London Music Hackspace, we performed with the hybrid drum kit and analog synth, with a patch based on controlled improvisation controlled by a UDP-based graphic score.

It’s been a lot of fun! Pics and videos coming soon!

My Article published on Digital Drummer Magazine

The last edition is out and it includes an article on my DIY digital drum kit. Here you can download a patch for Live8 which will allow you to get the most out of your digital drum kit, by connecting it to Superior Drummer 2.

On Friday February 22nd, I’ll be performing with the Hybrid Drum Kit in Birmingham, at the Network Music Festival. Hope to see you there!!!

Tomorrow, Inauguration of the Venice Kids' Carnival

Tomorrow morning, 11am, then 4pm, we will inaugurate Il Carnevale dei Ragazzi di Venezia. We will be presenting a great work by Mauricio Kagel, Variété ‘artist’ and ensemble, in collaboration with mime Jo Bulitt.

The place is awesome - I Giardini della Biennale, Ex-Padiglione Italia. The ticket is free and there’s lots to do, there’s absolutely no reason not to come!

Here’s the review from our last concert in Rovereto, just before closing this year’s concert season Homage to John Cage in Padova.
We were dreading this concert because it was the most classical context and we thought we were not their cuppa. Turns out they really enjoyed the performance. The hall was almost full and there were a lot of young people that came in the afternoon to follow our workshop and stayed till the very end, to perform But what about the noise of crumbling paper

Brake Drum Percussion - Imaginary Landscape /1

And the BDP is back, a homage to John Cage, this time performed in the furthermost part of northern Italy. Rovereto, in the lovely context of Sala Filarmonica. Join us at 3pm for a workshop and pre-concert talk, followed by the performance at 8.45pm.

I have just got back from a wonderful concert with the Brake Drum Percussion at the Santa Caterina Church-Museum in Treviso.

The astonishing acoustic and the magic atmosphere of the place allowed us to perform at best, we are really pleased. The project will be back on the road early December for another performance in Treviso, a didactic one this time, one in Padova and one in Rovereto. More details to come soon!
